That “Twilight” fanfiction that somehow got published and then somehow got movie people to agree to put it on the big screen has pulled off another coup, managing to snag some pretty talented and up and coming actors in the lead roles. “Pacific Rim”‘s Charlie Hunnam and “Ben and Kate”‘s Dakota Johnson will play Edward Cullen Christian Grey and Bella Swan Anastasia Steele in “50 Shades of Grey,” it was announced today.
The casting comes after many other sought after young actors – Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Emma Watson, Shailene Woodley, Alicia Vikander and more – publicly turned down the roles in the film that is controversial and limited in appeal to say the least. Sam Taylor-Wood is directing the adaptation (of the adaptation from Stephenie Meyer’s original teenage vampire love story) by Kelly Marcel. Instead of Edward keeping his vampirism a deep dark secret from Bella, here Christian is hiding a BDSM fetish. Ok then.
Hunnam’s casting is puzzling since his career seems to be finally taking off after a breakout role in this summer’s “Pacific Rim.” He’s also obviously in good graces with Guillermo del Toro, and will reunite with the director in next year’s haunted house horror “Crimson Peak.” Prior to this he was most known for his critically acclaimed role on F/X’s “Sons of Anarchy.”
Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, is less known but has impressed in small supporting roles in “The Social Network,” “Five Year Engagement” and “21 Jump Street”, and also led short-lived Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate.”
